Easily my favorite of the 2015 Hugo nominees for Short StoryIf you enjoy science fiction of a military nature you will enjoy this story The main character is surprisingly compelling it being an artificial intelligence the space battles were entertaining and discussion of the society and technology was interestingThe only issues I had with the story were due to it being a short story I would have liked longer space battles though there is an in story reason for the battles being brief and I liked the main character enough that I would have liked to see himit in a longer work I read this story as part of my due diligence in preparation for the 2015 Hugo Awards The same story as told by Tom Kratman in his nominated novella 'Big Boys Don't Cry' told in fewer words but with higher ratio of weapons porn to storytelling Blessedly short and with a massive spoiler in the title Hugo 2015 nominee reading This one gets a bad rap for being on one of the Puppy lists Ignore that or if you can't try to understand that this is what the sad though not rabid they just want to watch the world burn puppies were trying to get at I haven't read any of the other ones yet they're all on the list just because the awards were hijacked doesn't mean they weren't nominated but one it's own strength this should have been a solid contender It's a little too pat for me to give it the 5 but it's 4Oh and Theodore Beale is an asshole Let's just be clear on that 2015 Hugo nominee Best Short StoryI am a knight riding to warMy suit of armor is a single Mark III frigate a body of polysteel three hundred meters long with a skin of ceramic armor plating one point six meters thick In the place of a lance I have 160 Long Arm high acceleration deep space torpedoes with fission warheads Instead of a sword I carry two sets of tactical laser turrets twenty point defense low pulse lasers and two hypervelocity 100 centimeter projectile cannonsToday I will need few of those weapons 3 35 starsMilitary SF AI ethical dilemma PosthumanismUnfortunately one of the Sad Puppy slated short stories nominated for 2015 Hugo I haven't decided whether I'm voting any of the non novel categories because most of them are overrun with sad puppies Since they are short I'm reading the short stories to make sure I'm not overreacting A ship's AI starts thinking for itself in the middle of warThis story has one of my pet peeves claiming to use logic without understanding it at all Why does popular science fiction do this? Star Trek I'm looking at youAlso some of the characters were utterly asinine and simplistic Turncoat
